Beech trees are used for their thick shadows and dense foliage. It was widely grown as an ornamental tree throughout Europe.
Because it was introduced to England around 3,000 B.C historians suspect that Stone Age people used to eat the bitter nuts this tree produces.
Apart from adding flavour to smoked cheese or German beers, this wood is great to use in furniture.
Myrtle Beech is native to Victoria and Tasmania. For the wood experts, this has nothing to do with the Myrtle Bush dedicated to Aphrodite in Greece. These large-trunk trees can grow up to 40 m tall.
Myrtle Beech is a delight for cabinetry. It’s hard with a tough, close grain. The colour inside is a soft pink. It can also be used for flooring and furniture. Myrtle Beech forests take several hundred years to form, so treasure the timber for it’s age and history.
The American Birch variety can grow up to 30 meters high. The United States tree is hard, strong and heavy. Up until the invention of the chainsaw, it was often left untouched because it took too much effort to fell. The timber can be used for flooring, furniture and wooden ware.
DID YOU KNOW? Chips of Beech wood are used in the brewing process of Budweiser.
